Financial Aid
The MATC Federal School Code is 003866
The MATC Financial Aid office assists students by awarding financial aid to help pay education-related expenses. Financial aid is available from federal, state, and private resources. There are four primary types of financial aid programs: grants, scholarships, loans and federal work-study.
- Grants and scholarships are free money you will not have to pay back.
- Loans are money you will have to pay back.
- Federal work-study is money you will not have to pay back. You earn federal work-study money by working a job approved through the MATC JOBshop. You can use this earned money to help pay for your education-related expenses.
How to Apply
If you are planning to attend MATC during the 2009-10 school year, you are encouraged to apply for financial aid. Apply for financial aid by completing the 2009-10 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The MATC Federal School Code is 003866. Apply early so you do not miss out on any available grant money. Applying for financial aid does not guarantee that you will receive it. The student is responsible for any outstanding balance that is not covered by financial aid.
Step One
Gather information required to apply for Federal Financial Aid To complete your FAFSA online you will need to use information from your 2008 Federal Tax Return. If you have not completed your 2008 Federal Tax Return, do so immediately. Collect all of your income information for 2008 (signed Federal Tax Return 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ; W-2s from each job worked in 2008; and untaxed income received). If you are a dependent student (under the age of 24, single, no dependents and you are not a veteran), you will also need your parents' 2008 Federal Tax Returns and income information for 2008. You may estimate your 2008 earnings using your last check stub or your W-2s from your 2008 jobs. After you file your 2008 Federal Tax Return, you will need to update the information on your 2009-10 FAFSA application.
Step Two
Complete your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov Click on "Fill Out Your FAFSA" and select the 2009-10 school year and complete the 2009-10 FAFSA.
Step Three
Signing the FAFSA At the end of the application, you and your parent (if you are a dependent student) must agree to the FAFSA certification statement and sign your application. The easiest way to sign your application is electronically using a Federal Student Aid Personal Identification Number (PIN). You and your parent will need your own individual PINs to sign. If you need a PIN, apply at www.pin.ed.gov.
To apply for a PIN while in the FAFSA application, select the Apply For A PIN button. If you need a duplicate copy of your PIN, select the I Forgot/Don't Know My PIN button. Note that you will need to provide your "challenge response" to obtain your duplicate PIN.
Step Four
You will receive an electronic or paper Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal student aid processor. You will receive the SAR electronically if you listed an e-mail address while completing your FAFSA.
Review the SAR carefully and make sure the information is correct. If you see incorrect information, contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance. The MATC Financial Aid Office will receive your SAR information electronically from the U.S. Department of Education.
Important Information to Remember
You will not receive MATC financial aid for the 2009-10 school year until your 2009-10 FAFSA has been processed and the information has been received by the Financial Aid Office from the U.S. Department of Education.
Submit all forms/documents requested by the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. This is especially important if your FAFSA was selected for verification.
To receive a course fee or book deferment, the Financial Aid Office needs to receive:
- A valid Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from your processed 2009-10 FAFSA
- Verification that your financial aid has been awarded
You must be admitted into a MATC financial aid eligible degree or diploma program before the admission application deadline.
You must be enrolled in at least six credit hours, prior to the financial aid census date, to be eligible to receive a loan and state grants. In addition, for your loan to be processed, you must complete the online loan counseling and sign an online master promissory note. You can find the financial aid census date and other important dates at matc.edu, click on current student, financial aid, important dates.
You will receive an e-mail from MATC informing you of the financial aid that you have been awarded. It is your responsibility to read all MATC student e-mails and information that you receive from the Financial Aid Office. It is also your responsibility to update your postal mailing address and e-mail address with MATC and the U.S. Department of Education.
MATC encourages all students to apply for financial aid and have a processed FAFSA prior to our priority deadline of June 1, 2009. Feel free to contact the MATC Financial Aid Office with questions. We are in Room S222 at Downtown Milwaukee Campus and in the Student Services office at the Mequon, Oak Creek and West Allis Campuses. You can also contact us at 414-297-6908 or finaid@matc.edu.
How Financial Aid is Disbursed to Your MATC Student Account
At MATC your financial aid grants and scholarships will be disbursed to your student account starting the 3rd week of the semester. If you are a returning student at MATC and have been awarded a loan at MATC before, your loan will also be disbursed to your student account starting the 3rd week of the semester. If you are a new student at MATC, receiving a loan for the first time at MATC, your loan will be disbursed 30 days after the start of the semester. You must have completed your Entrance Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note before any loan funds will be sent to MATC. You can access Entrance Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note here.
Your financial aid will not be disbursed before classes start. We realize that having your books the first day of classes is vital to your academic success. You may be eligible to receive a book deferment if the MATC Financial Aid Office has received your FAFSA and your financial aid has been awarded for the semester. You are not eligible for a book deferment if your FAFSA has not been received and/or your financial aid has not been awarded for the semester. You can access the last date to purchase books on deferment by reviewing the Dates of Importance here.
It is for these reasons that it is important for you to complete your FAFSA application as early as possible to ensure that your financial aid has been awarded so that you can get a book deferment and purchase books for your first day of classes.
You can access the financial aid disbursement dates by reviewing the Dates of Importance here.
You can view the amount of financial aid that you were awarded by going to INFOnline here.
Are You Eligible to Receive a Financial Aid Refund?
Once your financial aid funds have been disbursed to your MATC student account, all charges that you have incurred at MATC will be deducted. These charges may include tuition, fees, book deferments, and other charges that you may have incurred. Any financial aid funds that are remaining after all of your charges have been paid, are processed into a financial aid refund check and mailed to the address that the MATC Registrar's office has on record for you.
If you are eligible to receive a financial aid refund check, the financial aid refund check will be mailed to you one (1) week after the financial aid has been disbursed to your MATC student account.
Tuition Deferment
If you are applying for Financial Aid after your tuition due date, you may need to apply for a Financial Aid tuition deferment. For information regarding the deferment, please access the Financial Aid Payment Option page here.
The 150% Rule
When you receive Financial Aid, you are subject to the 150% Rule. This rule means that if you attempt more than 150% of the credit hours needed to graduate from your program of study, you will not continue to receive financial aid. If you exceed 150% in any one program, you will not be eligible to continue to receive financial aid. All of the credits that you have ever taken at MATC or transferred to MATC, whether financial aid was used or not, are counted in this 150% rule calculation. If you have changed programs of study, all credits that you have ever taken at MATC or transferred to MATC are counted, whether they can be counted towards the credits you need to complete your program of study or not. You can access the 150% Rule form here.
