The Barber/Cosmetologist technical diploma program prepares you for the hair care/beauty profession. The program can be completed in one year to 18 months, including attendance through summer. You may enter the program in August or January. Students complete an externship course at a professional, licensed host salon. Employment prospects for barber/cosmetologists are excellent. Typical job titles are barber/cosmetologist, hair and scalp specialist, stylist, colorist, manicurist and makeup artist. Core skills include good manual dexterity and the ability to get along with people. An artistic flair and the ability to visualize hairstyles are also important. You must be able to work well under pressure, and sell hair products and services. Nail Technician (manicurist), manager and instructor certificate programs are also available.
