Roles and Responsibilities
Apprentice’s Responsibilities * Sign a contract, called an indenture, which is an agreement with your employer. A copy of the indenture is filed with the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, which must approve the contract.
* Be a reliable and responsible employee.
* Promptly complete all lessons, assignments and tests as required by MATC.
* Work faithfully and diligently throughout the duration of your apprenticeship and carefully carry out all assignments from your supervisors.
MATC’s Responsibilities * Provide adequate facilities and professional instructors who will teach a well-rounded understanding of trade theories and technique for the required hours of the indenture.
* Cooperate with the Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards and respective advisory committees.
* Certify to the Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards that students have completed the required related instruction.
Employer’s Responsibilities The company that employs you must:
* Indenture you. * Provide adequate and safe facilities for your on-the-job training. * Assign qualified personnel to teach you on the job. * Supervise you during your indenture. * Pay your wages. While apprenticeship wages vary, most apprentices begin at approximately 50% of the current skilled rate. In most trades, it has been the practice to provide a step increase every six months. The apprentice, however, must average at least 60% of the trade's skilled wage rate during the term of the apprenticeship. The term of training may vary from two to five years, depending on the trade. * As much as possible, the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee will work with the employer in your chosen profession to maintain training standards throughout the program.
