Trail Blazer Desirale Clemons Gets on Track
When she was a young girl, her beloved grandmother became very ill. "I told her, 'Grandma, I want to be the one who takes care of you.'" Thus began Desirale Clemons’ interest in nursing, which now has led her to the Panther Tracks guaranteed transfer program with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Undaunted Spirit Joe Gohagan Seizes Second Chance
By his own account, Joe Gohagan was drifting without a goal when an unnerving setback led him to redirect his life. Losing his job as a maintenance mechanic at Froedtert Hospital acted as the catalyst. It was a jolt, but at the age of 39, he seized the opportunity to throw himself headlong into getting an education that would lead to a fulfilling career.

Finding Herself Navajo Honor Student Discovers American Indian Heritage
Many people go to college hoping to find themselves. Beyond that, Kristina Nez Begay found something unexpected at Milwaukee Area Technical College - her cultural roots. For the first time, the 28-year-old is making a serious effort to explore her Navajo heritage. Thanks to MATC’s active Native American Student Movement (NASM), Office of Indian Affairs and input from her Navajo father, she is learning customs, traditions and a bit of the language.

Chef in the Making Jeff Mallegni Finds His Passion
Jeff Mallegni once thought he wanted to be a history teacher. He was serious enough about it that he invested two years in history studies. As time passed, however, he gradually realized that his true calling lay closer to his roots, in the kitchen. Now he is a chef in training at Milwaukee Area Technical College and a cook at one of Milwaukee’s fine restaurants.
