‘Panther Tracks’ Creates a Seamless Path from MATC to UWM
Thanks to Panther Tracks, a new guaranteed admission and transfer agreement, liberal arts and sciences students now have a clear, straight path from Milwaukee Area Technical College to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. If they stick to the path and keep their grades up, they can begin at MATC and be guaranteed admission at UWM, close to halfway done with their bachelor’s degree.

Collaboration Benefits Employer, W-2 Clients
A unique public/private venture has turned 14 unemployed and underemployed W-2 clients into gainfully employed welders for Milwaukee’s Tramont Corp, just in time for the new year. “It’s a wonderful Christmas present and feels great to bring 2007 in with a fresh new job,” says Howard Lea, 49, who started at Tramont Dec. 26 after three years of unemployment. “I’m beginning my life all over again. This is a golden opportunity to get into the workforce so I can support my family.”

Virtual Excitement
Classes Expand at Discovery World
Chantell Singleton wanted a challenge. She ended up getting that and more as a student intern working at the new Discovery World at the lakefront. MATC is a partner in the visionary educational and entertainment hub. A graphic design/commercial art major, Singleton last summer joined a select group of advanced students and recent graduates in creating a prototype virtual reality pod.

Grant Supports Skills Testing, Training for Production Workers
Milwaukee Area Technical College has received a $446,400 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to implement online skills testing, certification and training for manufacturing production employees. By creating standardized skill sets for the manufacturing workforce, the goal is to recruit and train skilled workers, improve productivity and increase job portability for the individual worker.

MATC, UW-Madison Launch Badger Track
Milwaukee Area Technical College Liberal Arts and Sciences students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and earn 54 prescribed credits are eligible for guaranteed admission to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Badger Track” – the UW-Madison Transfer Contract Program – also guarantees special consideration for MATC students with GPAs of 2.6 to 2.99. Signed in June, the agreement is effective for the fall 2006 semester.

Future Power
Wind Tower Gets Green Light
The Mequon Planning Commission has unanimously approved construction of a wind turbine at the Mequon Campus of Milwaukee Area Technical College. MATC officials said they were confident about fulfilling the commission’s construction and maintenance requirements. The 160-foot tall unit is part of the Renewable Energy Technology Education Center (RETEC) initiative designed to educate students and the public about renewable energy technologies.

West Allis Campus Plans for More Space, ‘Green Roof’
The MATC West Allis Campus will acquire 5,400 more square feet of badly needed classroom space, if the City of West Allis Plan Commission and the Common Council approve plans for expansion. The addition would include four general classrooms, a computer lab and a multipurpose science lab. The design incorporates one of the latest ideas in energy conservation.

Four-Year College Transfer Options Triple in Five Years
In the last five years, the number of baccalaureate transfer options at Milwaukee Area Technical College has more than tripled. MATC currently offers 362 credit transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities; only 89 existed in 2000. Transfer-bound students now constitute more than one-fifth of enrollment. In a recent survey asking students about their long-range goals, nearly one-third said they planned to continue their education at the next level.

Historic Bennett College Joins Transfer Pact
Bennett College for Women is the fifth historically black college to sign a comprehensive transfer agreement with Milwaukee Area Technical College, with talks in progress to add six more schools. “We are pleased and honored to be adding this storied institution to our original group of four partners,” said Darnell E. Cole, MATC president. “And we are dedicated to further expanding transfer options for African-American students who want access to the black college experience.”
The agreement is significant in that it aligns MATC with the leading black women’s college in America. For Bennett College, it is the first such partnership agreement outside of its home state.

GE Healthcare Gift Strengthens Biomed
Tech Program
When you need a heart scan or an emergency X-ray, the last thing you want is for the machine to break. Keeping it running smoothly is the job of biomedical electronics technicians trained by Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Thanks to a gift from GE Healthcare, students in the program now will have the benefit of practicing on some of the most advanced equipment available, used in medical centers around the world. The medical diagnostics arm of giant General Electric has donated a complete, state-of-the art, intensive care/cardiac care monitoring system to the college, valued at $350,000.
“This is a partnership in which everybody wins - the college, our students, the industry, and, in the end, patients,’ said Darnell E. Cole, MATC president. “It’s just one example of how MATC teams up with industry for the betterment of the community.”

HVAC Jobs
Like many large employers, Johnson Controls, Inc. is worried about the impending outflow of skilled workers as the baby boom generation retires. The company, based in Glendale, is a global market leader in automotive systems and facility management and control. It services more than 26,000 miles of heating and cooling ductwork around the world, and for that it needs skilled technicians thoroughly versed in its latest comfort and energy technologies.
Johnson Controls could have opted to deliver its own “aftermarket” training to tech school graduates. Instead it made a bold move to attack the problem at the very start of the jobs pipeline: in the classroom.
