MATC Expands Bricklaying & Masonry Program
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (March 20, 2007) – An expanded technical diploma in bricklaying and masonry will be offered starting in fall 2007 at the West Allis Campus of Milwaukee Area Technical College, 1200 S. 71st St. An industry-driven steering committee saw a demand for more highly trained masons and advocated the change from a one-semester training program to a two-semester diploma program.
“As a masonry contractor, I am happy to see that the masonry program will be extended to two semesters,” said John Donahue, president of Donahue Masonry, Inc. “One semester is just not enough time for a student to fully grasp the trade, and the two semesters will also show the student’s further commitment and interest. It is very expensive to train employees on the job. When more education can be done in the classroom and in the shop, it helps contractors tremendously. The students coming out of this program are going to have a much better chance of finding employment and staying employed.”
The fall semester will focus on basic training in laying brick and concrete block. Students will spend the second semester on higher technical skills training, including laying glass block, arch construction and fireplace construction. Along with hands-on training, students will take courses in blueprint reading, construction safety, scaffold building, construction math, building layout, communication skills and methods of masonry construction. Upon completion of the program, graduates will possess the skills necessary to start a career in either commercial or residential masonry construction.
“Learning the basic skills is one of the keys to a successful career,” said Tom Pscheid, MATC’s lead masonry instructor. “With a two-semester program, the students will be able to concentrate on basic skill training for an entire semester before going on to advanced masonry construction techniques. With a stronger foundation and greatly expanded background in specialty skills, students will be more valuable to contractors who hire them.”
