Overview — Interior Design is an associate degree program that offers two unique choices to prepare you for an exciting career designing residential and commercial interiors. In the first option, Interior Design Foundations, you study architectural drawing, space planning, kitchen design, computer-aided drafting and sales techniques. In the second option, Interior Design Specializations, you focus on the design of health care interiors, corporate facilities, and the interiors of hotels and resorts. An opportunity to participate in an internship is experienced in course INDSGN-163 Field Experience in Interior Design. Certificates in Interior Design career areas are also available, and applicable toward the degree requirements. Two courses, Furniture Industry and Furniture History, are available as online courses.
Career Outlook and Expected Learning Outcomes — The greater Milwaukee area offers a wide variety of career opportunities, as does the rest of the state. The first option, Foundations, provides you with the skills needed to work as an Interior Designer, and the second option, Specializations, prepares you for employment in areas of current growth in commercial design. Presently, the greatest employment opportunities are in designing health care facilities and kitchens. Graduates may be employed by design studios, furniture stores, commercial distributorships and architectural firms. Additionally, graduates may obtain work in lighting design, computer-aided drafting, hospitality design, and as a facility designer for business and industry.
Career Preparation — Employers expect you as a program graduate to be able to:
- Develop a design concept
- Visualize a design solution in three dimensions
- Make the appropriate color and finish selections
- Justify choices to a client
- Communicate design suggestions with both words and graphics
Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to the program:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment
Art, drafting, speech or any computer courses are beneficial. To succeed in this field, you need to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people. You need the ability to work with space and color. If you enjoy attention to detail and are self-motivated, you will find interior design a fulfilling career choice.
Future Opportunities — If you are interested in a baccalaureate degree upon completion of the program, check with a program counselor or advisor, and the institution you plan to attend regarding the transfer of MATC credits.
This program will transfer to one or more four-year institutions.
