Overview — The Small Business Training diploma program prepares you to start a new career in management, or your own business. It is also useful if you are seeking career advancement or a job change. The training is designed to give you a broad background of business knowledge. It also prepares you for employment in a variety of industries including manufacturing, service and retail.

This diploma is also offered in a bilingual-assisted format.

Career Outlook — The small business sector has been recognized worldwide as a primary contributor to economic growth. In order for this sector to develop its full potential, small business owners and managers need to develop skills not only to manage their businesses, but to deal with issues in the new global business environment.

Career Preparation and Expected Learning Outcomes — Employers expect you as a graduate of this diploma program to be able to:

  • Manage basic business and marketing skills
  • Understand business transactions and opportunities
  • Be self-sufficient and independent
  • Develop and conduct effective sales
  • Demonstrate leadership and team-building skills
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the business computer environment

Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to
the program:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment

Some capabilities are of major significance to your success in the program. For example, you must demonstrate tact and diplomacy in your interactions with others. You will need to possess the flexibility to shift attention as problems present themselves, have an interest in work involving people and business procedures and exhibit patience and courtesy in handling inquiries and complaints.
