Overview: The Opticianry Science technical diploma program is designed to prepare you to fabricate and dispense corrective lenses from written prescriptions or duplication of existing eyewear. This program includes surfacing, finishing, dispensing and business techniques needed in retail optical establishments, wholesale laboratories and private practice environments. An externship component of the program and the on-campus dispensary provide actual experience in a working situation. This program may be taken on a part-time basis.

Career Preparation and Expected Learning Outcomes — When you graduate from this program, employers will expect you to be able to:
- Lay out, grind, fine and polish ophthalmic lenses
- Machine and hand-edge lenses
- Tint hard resin lenses
- Insert lenses into a variety of frames
- Duplicate prescriptions from existing glasses
- Verify finished prescriptions for accuracy
- Adjust and fit optical devices to patients and repair ophthalmic frames
- Display a knowledge and understanding of contact lens theory, design and use
- Demonstrate an understanding of optical business procedures
- Demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical standards
Preparation for Admission — The following is required for admission to the program:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment
- Good health as evidenced by a medical examination
- Documentation that the Essential Job Functions have been reviewed. This is in keeping with the requirements of the federal Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Documentation of proper immunizations
The ability to apply technical knowledge to relevant tasks contributes to the success of the dispensing optician. In addition, the optician must be able to deal with the public on a professional level and possess strong written and oral communication skills, manual dexterity and sound judgment. A neat, well-groomed appearance and conscientious work habits are also required.
Future Opportunities: Graduates can sit for the American Board of Opticianry competency examination and/or National Contact Lens Examination.
