Program code: 10-196-1
This curriculum goes into effect starting with the summer 2008 semester.
This page was last updated in July 2007.
Overview — Management Development is an associate degree program designed to train people who are currently employed in leadership and management positions, or people who aspire to move into such positions. This program develops the skills and knowledge needed to be effective in your organization. The curriculum focuses on assisting you to develop a wide range of supervisory skills in areas including human relations, budgeting, process improvement and report writing. Because the program is designed for working adults, it is offered in an “accelerated” format called “FORWARD Management.” The accelerated format allows you to finish your degree in less than three years by taking classes one evening per week, year-round. Each three-credit course is six weeks long, four hours per night. If your goal is to enhance your skills without completing an associate degree, you can enroll in the Management Development certificate program.
Career Outlook — Skilled leaders are essential to the success of organizations in all areas of business and industry. Graduates of MATC’s Management Development associate degree program typically are employed in positions as supervisors, lead persons, group leaders and managers.
Career Preparation and Expected Learning Outcomes — After completing the program, employers will look to you to bring the following skills and knowledge to your position:
- Understanding of the supervisor’s role in planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling a workgroup
- Leadership, team-building and communication skills
- Human resource skills in selecting, evaluating, training and disciplining employees
- Understanding the legal issues that face supervisors
- Skills in using data, problem-solving skills and processes to analyze and improve quality
- Skills to design, implement and evaluate formal projects and budgets
Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to the program:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Demonstration of proficiency in basic skills through a course placement assessment
- Two or more years of full-time work experience
- An interview with the program chairperson
Future Opportunities — If you are interested in a baccalaureate degree upon completion of the program, check with a program counselor or advisor, and the institution you plan to attend regarding the transfer of MATC credits.
