Strategic Planning
Over the decades, MATC's mission, vision and planning process have been periodically reviewed and refined by faculty, administration, and the district board of the college through collaborative efforts and in the context of the college's accreditation process.
The following mission, vision and plan shape MATC's direction:
Vision Statement
MATC is a premier, comprehensive technical college that provides excellence in education to enrich, empower, and transform lives in our community
Mission Statement
As a public, two-year comprehensive technical college, MATC offers quality educational and training opportunities and services to its diverse, metropolitan community by collaborating with partners to advance the lives of its students.
The Strategic Plan
Strategic planning is the process of transforming an organization's mission, vision, values, and goals into tangible results.
MATC's Strategic Plan directs institutional, divisional and departmental decision-making and planning through a clear, consensual process.
2007-2014 Strategic Plan Goals
- Provide Quality Student Learning
- Promote Student Pathways
- Enhance Stakeholder Partnerships
- Invest in People
- Ensure Sustainability

Under the guidance of the Executive Vice President/Provost, the Office of Institutional Research & Strategic Planning (IRSP) provides oversight by guiding the development, implementation, and monitoring of MATC's Strategic Plan, including continuous improvement initiatives. It also measures and provides evidence that encourages long-term improvements to our systems and processes.

In addition, Strategic Planning is linked with the budget process and the institution's research and quality improvement functions as reflected in college priorities, initiatives, and data.
Continuous Improvements
MATC's Strategic Planning process is closely aligned with the college's organizational structures and its accreditation pathway. External and internal reviews of 2009 MATC's 100-page "systems portfolio" capture the current structure and functioning of the entire institution, and they are folded within the strategic planning process. They form a basis for prioritizing areas for improvement guided by the plan.
Continuous Improvements are a hallmark of strategic planning. They are guided by "Principles of High Performance Organizations" adapted from the Higher Learning Commissions Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). They describe the characteristics that quality colleges and universities strive to actualize within their culture.
- Learning: Develop everyone's potential in a learning-centered environment
- People: Respect for and willingness to invest in people
- Focus: Follow a Mission & Vision driven by students' and other stakeholders' needs
- Agility: Develop the ability, flexibility, and responsiveness to changing needs and conditions
- Integrity: Recognize and demonstrate responsible institutional citizenship
- Collaboration: Cooperate internally and externally with a shared institutional focus
- Involvement: Encourage broad-based participation of stakeholders to facilitate better decisions
- Foresight: Track trends and anticipate changes that may affect stakeholders and/or operations.
- Information: Seek and use data to assess current capacities and measure performance realistically.
- Leadership: Create and support a quality-driven culture by modeling values and behaviors that communicate a comprehensive and focused vision to all stakeholders.
To support this integration, the IRSP Office is located in room M222 at the downtown campus, adjacent to the Office of Accreditation and Continuous Improvement (M226).
Questions concerning Strategic Planning should be forwarded to Dr. Tom Pilarzyk, IRSP Director, at 414-297-7513 or pilarzyt@matc.edu.

Getting Involved
Looking for a way to help make MATC one of the premier, comprehensive technical colleges in the nation? The college's seven core committees are looking for members of the MATC community - faculty, staff, students - to serve on strategy work teams during the 2011-2012 academic year.
Seventeen Quality Improvement Projects have been identified that will help build on MATC's foundation of providing quality educational and training opportunities and services to our diverse, metropolitan community. The list of projects covers a range of topics and you do not need to have previous experience with a core committee to join a work team.
Faculty members who do receive load or release time can earn hours toward their certification requirements. This is a terrific way to meet faculty and staff from other areas of the college, share your talents, and make a difference!
If you are interested in serving on a work team, please contact Michele Schimke in Institutional Research and Strategic Planning at 297-6486 or schimkem@matc.edu
