Speak Up for Safety! is Milwaukee Area Technical College's campaign to create a safe environment on all MATC campuses. All members of the MATC community - students, faculty, staff - play an important role in creating and maintaining a safe environment that supports learning and working.
How can I make a report?
All members of the MATC community are encouraged to report observations of behavior or communications of concern via the online Speak Up For Safety Incident Report form in situations of non-imminent danger.
Reports may be filed anonymously, but students and employees are encouraged to provide contact information for follow-up purposes.
What should be reported?
Examples of behaviors that should be reported include:
- Aggressive, disruptive, disturbing, destructive or intimidating behaviors
- Suicidal thoughts, writing and behavior (cutting, etc.)
- Sudden changes in academic performance or personal appearance (inability to care for oneself)
- Excessive use of alcohol or drugs that results in repeated impairment
- Changing patterns in interactions, communications or discussion, or class participation
- Illegal activity (theft, fraud, domestic violence, drug activity, etc.)
- Unsafe facility conditions (non-working emergency telephones; chemical/biological hazards; wet/loose surfaces; exposed electrical equipment, etc.)
Behavior that can be interpreted as a threat to self, others or property should be reported immediately to Public Safety.
Reports will be evaluated based upon defined criteria for further action or continued monitoring. One function of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is to provide a centralized source of information concerning behaviors that are problematic, so that patterns of student behavior may be identified. Any behavior that causes concern may be reported to BIT, no matter how small and even if the reporter lacks direct knowledge of what occurred.
MATC's Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)
The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is one resource that MATC utilizes to promote a safe learning and working environment. The BIT is a multi-disciplinary team established by the Vice President of Student Services. MATC’s BIT includes Student Services leadership, counselors and staff from Student Accommodations, Public Safety and Student Life.
The BIT works to provide a safe, violence-free and productive community by monitoring student behaviors of concern and coordinating early interventions when warranted. As incidents are reported, the BIT evaluates information, investigates reports, assesses situations, and creates plans of action, including monitoring and targeting referrals for assistance. In some cases, the BIT may recommend disciplinary action outlined by the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook. A primary goal of the BIT is to identify patterns of behavior early and intervene as necessary to prevent escalation of the behavior and reduce the risk of violence on campus.
How can I contact the BIT?
All members of the MATC community are encouraged to report observations of student behavior or communications of concern via the online Maxient Incident Report form in situations of non-imminent danger.
